Anal glands are designed to provide lubrication when a dog passes stool. These glands, that are located just inside your dog’s rectum, can sometimes fail to empty properly which can lead to discomfort and infection.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

No, unless you have experience doing so. It is always best to have your veterinarian express your dog’s anal glands. By doing this, we can further evaluate them for signs of infection or any other underlying issues.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

It can be one of the signs of anal gland impaction. However, we recommend you come in to see your DVM.
